As many residents know, the Las Vegas Valley experienced an unusually wet monsoon season this year with 21 out of 27 days of measurable rainfall during mid-August to early September. Nearly every resident was challenged by harsh driving conditions, flooded roads and yards, and the Grand Teton becoming a river more than once. It wasn’t just your roads and yards that were affected; all golf courses in the area were hit by the extended period of heat, humidity and rainfall over the past thirty days.

As the weather changes in the fall, the majority of Las Vegas golf courses switch to cool weather ryegrass by overseeding. At Silverstone, we grow ryegrass all year long, which allows our golfers to play with no cart path restrictions. This is a benefit our golfers LOVE! What we see during this time of year, however, are thinning fairways as a result of the recent weather conditions. We know that this is not what you like to see as you head out for a day on the course, but have no fear! Our experienced and knowledgeable golf course maintenance staff knows exactly how to combat this issue. They are currently refurbishing the affected fairways with tens of thousands of pounds of ryegrass seed to get them just how you want them.

Remember, Las Vegas is a desert, and we are in an extended drought. Despite the inconvenience of flooding and thinning fairways, the rain is a great blessing to our valley, and even to the course! The lakes at Silverstone used to suffer from dehydration, and now they are filled to the top! And did you see those rainbows?

We realize the inconvenience over the past few weeks, but with the green thumbs of our maintenance staff, we will get the fairways back into shape in a flash! The bentgrass greens have been unaffected by the weather and remain in excellent condition. We can’t control the weather, but we do know what to do when the weather conditions change.
